Millions of people suffer from sleep anxiety. Anxiety is the most common health disorder in the United States, affecting about 40 million people. Those who have this disorder tend to suffer from sleep disruption.  People with preexisting psychiatric conditions, such as depression, often suffer from sleep anxiety about falling asleep or staying asleep.

Tired But Can’t Sleep?

If you’re tired but can’t fall asleep, worry, or become fearful of sleep, you could be suffering from sleep anxiety. Anxiety is a normal occurrence in humans as it helps us become aware when we’re in a dangerous situation. However, if anxiety affects your ability to function on a day-to-day basis, you may suffer from chronic anxiety. Chronic anxiety can make it very difficult to fall asleep at night, no matter how tired you may be.

Symptoms of Sleep Anxiety

If you believe you are suffering from sleep anxiety, but you’re not quite sure, here are some symptoms to look out for:

  • Constant feeling of being overwhelmed
  • Not able to concentrate
  • Nervousness
  • Restlessness
  • Feeling like you’re constantly in danger
  • Fast heart rate
  • Rapid breathing
  • Sweating
  • Tense Muscles
  • Trembling

Lastly, some people suffer from nocturnal panic attacks. Nocturnal panic attacks are when you’re sleeping and suddenly wake up bursting with fear.

Sleeping Pills For Anxiety

When you’re tired but can’t sleep, medication or sleeping pills prescribed by a doctor may help relieve symptoms. There are multiple medications a doctor can prescribe to help you fall asleep at night, however, sleeping pills or sleep aids are not a cure. They can be effective when used occasionally, but over time you will start to build a tolerance, and they will no longer be effective. It’s best to seek out professional help to treat the root of the problem through a combination of Cognitive-behavioral therapy, healthy sleep habits, and medication.

Side-effects of Sleeping Pills

As with most medications, there’s usually always a risk or side effects involved. If you’re purchasing medicines over the counter or getting them prescribed by a doctor, it’s always best to be cautious and follow the directions.

Some side-effects are:

  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Balance issues
  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Heartburn
  • Headache
  • Change in appetite
  • Burning or tingling in your hands, feet, arms, or legs
  • Issues with attention or memory
  • Weakness
